Assignment 3

Toy Design : Play and Act of Play

hhhh.jpg

Task

In this assignment, I was given a body part, the neck, & shoulders, and was asked to create a toy that was related to it. To demonstrate how the toy works, I need to make a video recording of someone (or myself) playing with it. An infographic poster is also required to advertise the toy. Before creating the toy, research and an initial plan should be conducted in the following manner: empathy, define, ideation, and prototype.

Transform

This poster highlights the toy's features, how it looks on a person, and its uniqueness. I am the model of this toy.

Fun & Creative Role Play

Video demonstration

My mum is the model of this toy. This video will be showcasing the act of play, mechanism and how the change parts according to your ideas and prompts.

Progress

Define

I had some trouble branching out ideas from my findings. However, by looking at examples and gaining inspiration from others' work, I was able to finish the slides/drawings. Transform, Octopus Crane, and Bollar Coaster are three of my favourite initial ideas because they are all fun and inventive.

Ideation

I began to develop 3 of the initial ideas(Transform, Octopus Crane, and Bollar Coaster) more in-depth in terms of materials used, function, benefits, and etc. This process was quite straightforward, showing the toys' attributes and visuals. After, I chose Transform(1st ideation) to further develop in the prototype stage.

Empathy

I did some research and visualized my findings in my drawing block. I also drew a connection between my own experience and the theme. As I enjoy drawing and finding new ways to challenge myself, this is a relaxing and enjoyable process. I attempted to make those drawings as attractive as possible so that they wouldn't be boring to look at.

Prototype

This was the stage at which I began making and documenting my toy. I demonstrated the procedures I construct my toy as well as the materials I used. It took me two days to finish. I was satisfied with the result.

Reflection

I was able to relate this task to my own experiences. My inspiration came from childhood games, which I reimagined as a more creative and entertaining toy. While playing toys/games as a child, there are various issues that I consider when designing my toys, such as safety concerns like sharp edges and little units that can be swallowed by small children.

2.0 Lifelong Learning

3.0 Thinking and Problem Solving Skill

I realized that some materials I planned to use earlier were not suitable during the construction due to strength and weight problems so I changed them. The result turned out perfect without changing the core function.

6.0 Intrapersonal Skills

This is the first time I've worked on a model or an actual item. Thus, I created a timetable to keep track of my progress as I was afraid of wasting too much free time making the toy. In addition, because this is my first time constructing an actual toy prototype, I constantly asking my tutors for feedback so that I can improve. I was able to prioritise what I needed to accomplish, when I needed to do it, and finish my work on time.
