Assignment 1

Geometry & Form

IMG_8787_edited.jpg

Task

Everything starts from the basic: points , lines and planes. This assignment requires me to explore these 3 forms by incorporating design principles and create 3 100mm x 100mm models & 1 final model. My chosen principle is rhythm.

Outcome

Points & rhythm

Model 1

Points are shown on the corners of the triangles that arranged in a spiral manner which represents rhythm. The chaotic movement of the spiral and bamboo sticks resembles human spinal cord.

Model 2

Model 3

Final model

Lines & Rhythm

Planes & Rhythm

Planes, lines & Rhythm

A vortex-like structure made from different size of rounded corner triangles. Lines are strongly shown by the gaps and edges of triangles although they are planes.

A solid structures consists of  3 levels going up in a spiral manner. The model looks like a motor generator. The movement of each levels ( rings ) are slanted, creating a illusion that the structure is turning and rotating.

The model is more towards a building, specifically a futuristic building. The waves create a direction that resembles rhythm with repeated balsa sticks. It is developed from model 2 with combination of elements in model 3.

The assignment gave me a good exposure to exploration of design basic, from points to planes. Besides, design principles are very useful and important to design a good building which is aesthetic pleasing that can serve as a sensorial and for users' feeling. The 4 images on left are tattoo stamps. Tattoo stamps are basically a form of my feelings when doing this assignments, what I felt, expression , my emotion by extracting the forms from my final model. ( Top, section and side views)
