Re-imaging Public Space

hhhhhhh.jpg

Task

In this group assignment, my members and I were given the task of selecting an existing public area in any region to do a virtual case study. We were tasked with investigating the tangible and intangible features of public space before and after the covid-19 outbreak. Besides, we were also assigned to initiate interventions in Taylor's Lake Side Campus, incorporated with this pandemic. Uni Square was the site of our intervention.

Case Study

Taylor's Lake Side Campus

Area of intervention - Uni Square

The world, including our campus, had changed since the emergence of covid-19. The buzz had died down, and students were rarely seen hanging out outside. Thus, we sought to turn Uni Square into a safe space for Taylorians to stay, stroll and have a small gathering.

Uni Square Intervention

Model

We kick-started our intervention in Uni Square by doing sketches and drawings as it was easier to look at the overall concept and design. I was in charge of jobbing down the ideas and sketching out the drawings.

Progress

Arrangement

We organized our data in a logical order for progress check during tutorials. All of the elements were arranged in a hierarchy to make them easier to read.

Do Improvements

We did some adjustments after receiving comments from our lecturer. We were told to add in evaluations and more detailed information as the overall content was quite minimal.

Our intervention in Uni Square began with a brainstorming session. I scribbled down the concept and drew some sketches. I also created a plan view of the site so that I could see the whole concept more easily.

Do Research & Gather Information

We began our group assignment by creating a Canva board that allowed us to easily organize and track our progress. We've gathered and filtered all of the information  here.

Intervention Model

I built a model of Uni Square's intervention from recycled materials. It took me 1 day to complete. Although during the process, I accidentally cut and burnt my hand but i was satisfied by the outcome.

Reflection

1.0 Discipline Specific Knowledge

I have a clear understanding during lecture and able to use this understanding in this assignment. I understand what is tangible and intangible elements in term of public space and able to list out all elements.  I also learned about spatial relationships, which I applied to this project.

3.0 Thinking and Problem Solving Skills

When we decided to begin the intervention phase, we ran across a snag. None of us have any experience with 3D modelling software. Although it is not required, because I am skilled in art and craft, I was able to construct one real model. I made it on time, which my teammates greatly appreciated.

5.0 Interpersonal Skills

This was my second time working as an unofficial team leader. I made a schedule based on previous experience so that everyone knows what they need to do and when they need to do. I gave some suggestions to assist them in their task. I was also able to keep track of everyone's progress and motivate them.
