Virtual Trip
To Brazil, Rocinha

The built environment plays a critical part in maintaining a healthy community. The residential area in Rocinha is disorganized, and a favela has developed. Because of low lighting and small lanes, crime is more likely to occur, but the government chooses not to intervene. Even during the day, it is dangerous to walk alone, and there have been shootings.

Furthermore, Rocinha’s hygiene is poor. They don't have a functioning sewage system or drainage system. Sewage and wastewater are channeled to a nearby beach, posing a threat to the aquatic ecosystem. Diseases like tuberculosis will spread because of the contaminated water. On the other hand, rats and cockroaches have taken up residence in the unsanitary residential area. As a result, the built environment is important to maintaining a sanitary environment. The local government should devote more resources to improving sewage systems. It may also aid in the preservation of the beach.

Last but not least, Rocinha features a highly densely packed people and houses. There is no public space, and the infrastructure is frequently in poor condition. Residents will develop mental health problems and become depressed in the long run if they stay there. There isn't much of a green spot where folks can relax and catch their breath. A well-planned city may achieve a lot.
